Most Tuesday nights last summer you’d have found me in my friend Aaron’s backyard playing volleyball.

My brother taught me the rules of volleyball when I was 13 and what I lack in talent I make up for in my competitive nature, rule following tendencies and love of the game.

Even though we played for fun in our backyard league we still kept score. Otherwise it would have been dull – no points tallied, no winners declared, just endless back-and-forth. I probably wouldn’t have played!

Without scores, there’s no thrill, no drive to push harder, and no way to measure success.

It is the same in your business. You have to keep score in everything that you do – it isn’t just about numbers; it’s what makes every move count, every play matter, and every victory sweeter.

Here are four simple ways I keep score in my business.

  1. Is my business paying me enough to  cover my personal financial goals and dreams?
  2. Can my business easily tuck aside a minimum of 5% every month in a separate savings account?
  3. Does my business have enough saved to easily pay its taxes?
  4. Am I keeping my Operating Expenses to 30% of my revenue?

If I can answer yes to these four questions I know I am winning and having fun!

How are you keeping score in your business?
